My latest project 1949 chevy kustom.
I've owned this car for a few years now, having swapped my 23T for it. Having always been a bit of a kustom fan it was a good base to start, basically it was a wreck!! I ran it around in purple primer for a while until bits started to fall off , so it got laid up while other things got in the way! But now I have decided to go for it!
So just to bore everyone senseless I thought I would do an online diary.
THE PLAN.So just to bore everyone senseless I thought I would do an online diary.
Well it's a 4door so the first thing to do is 2 door it!
The rest will be standard kustom touches shaved door handles, frenched headlights, fender skirts,
floating grill, you know the rest .
But it's not going to be just a copy of stuff built before, I want to add my own twist on things!!
Roof chop? Not sure about this one but if Chris Hepworth has anything to do with it, it will be.
The metalwork is not a problem, it's the glass!
Although I am looking into this.
CHASSIS.
This will be standard but with mustang2 front clip and
air bags all round.
ENGINE.
I bought a fully rebuilt straight 6 a while back and I like the look of these engines all dressed up, so I will be adding shiny bits dual carbs split exhaust etc.
Go to gallery to see how it looks now.
Just added some updated pic's take a look.
THIS WEEKS UPDATE.
Well i've started cutting!Chopped 180mm out of the
rear doors to add into the front sliced, the front in half, sound simple but it took a lot of measuring.
Had to cut were the body line closely matched as
there is a curve in the door which runs deeper
as it gets closer to the front wing,I also had to consider inner latch window winder ect.
The B pillar was also removed at this point which was a lot easier than I expected.
Now I just need to clean up the edges and i can
start welding it back together again!!
I also bought some 2 door rear quarter repair panels
from the states which should help me line every thing up.
Update 5/01/07
Well things are moving along but not as quickly as
I would have like, but isn't that always the same!
Anyway the passenger door + qtr are welded up,b pillar is back in place and is now part of the rear qtr.Just requires a bit of hammer + dollie work+ skimming with filler.
Tony the stitch came round with leather samples for the interior and i have picked the colour. As for price reasonable is an understatement.I am also going photograph Tony in action as he works his magic on the seats so watch this space.
But before he can take the seats I have had to convert the seats to fold forward as per a 2door.I just copied the hinge set up on Jon's 46 ford, works quite well but the seats aren't split so the whole back tilts forward.
Ordered a TCI front end with air-ride, through Duksville, 2 weeks after the hotrod drags with a delivery date of Feb 07,so was more than happy when Paul rang to say it had arrive at the beginning of Dec!
So I spent Christmas week fitting that.
Quite straight forward really, but i did ring Carl up
to come and check everything before I started welding!
Cheers mate.
The only real problem I had was the cross member
was suppose to be a bolt in affair but very few of the
holes lined up so rather than hacking the holes about
I welded the cross member in permanently.
This weekend I will weld up the shock mounts and
mount the chopped steering column as it's rack rather than box.
20/4/07
Front end is all in and looking good, just need uj's
to link column to rack.
Body mods are now well on the way rear doors
are now shorter and welded-up and front doors
are extended and new lower rear quarters for a
2 door fitted, which along with the inner window
garnish helped keep the proportions correct.
Sounds easy when you write in down but there
is a lot hours in the job.
I've also fitted new inner and outer sill as well
as new front floor pans.
OCT 07.
A lot has happened in the last few months,
personally and on the car but here is an update.
I bought a pressurised shot blaster of ebay
and some grit from a local supplier and blasted
the body to strip off the last of the paint and rust
and more RUST!!
It took a couple of weekends and there is grit everywhere.I was fun to do but if i build another
one i will send it away and let someone else do it!
The body is now of the chassis so the chassis could
be blasted.A friend dropped the chassis of at a local
Powder coaters who could blast it but could
not prime it.So as soon as Dave finished work we
brought it back to my garage (Cheers Dave!)
and etch primed it.The blaster made a wonderful
job of stripping 50 years of crap off.The chassis
is in pretty good shape only rot to be found was in
the rear cross member, which is an easy fix.
I have painted the engine,a bit early really but
a few shiny bits have arrived from the states
and I wanted to see how they all looked together.
The plan this weekend is to put the axle in place
so I can measure for the ladder bars and put the engine back in the frame to make the new engine
mounts.
I will load some more photos soon.
